Update on my eyes

This is me right after my surgery.
I can see! So I guess the surgery went well. I still can't see perfect, there is still some blurriness and haze, but all in all I can see better than before without glasses (or lenses).

The day of the surgery went by very fast. The surgery itself took about 30 sec on each eye, and did not hurt at all. There was a mild discomfort when the doctor put on the eyelid-holder on the second eye, but he paused a bit when I pointed it out (and my eye went rolling and eye-muscles twitching) and waited a minute more for the anesthesia to work before trying again. That, and some irritating and stinging eye-drops before the surgery was what hurt at all (and we are not talking really hurting, more like getting something in your eye that’s mildly discomforting). Immediately after the surgery I could actually see quite well, almost as good as with glasses, just a little hazed. Then I could go home, and got the surgeons mobile-number in case something felt wrong. I got pain-killing eye-drops to use the next two days, and tear-like eye-drops to use every 10 Min until I went to bed. Every 10 Min sounds like a lot, but I found that it was almost too long to wait, because after the surgery my eyes felt sore and dry. The eye-drops really were comforting, and I just waited for the alarm to ring every 10 Min to get to ease my sore eyes. I found it hard to keep my eyes open, like the muscles around my eyes were tired and sore, and I felt like a vampire when ever I saw light. So home we went, and into my dark bedroom to listen to the Nightside on audio-book, and drop my eyes.

I woke a lot in the night, feeling dry and sore, and my eyes were clogged together with dried stuff, so I had to really blink and drag my eyes open. Whenever I woke, I would use the eye-drops to ease my dry eyes, and then just go to sleep again. I was really afraid to rub my eyes in my sleep, so whenever I felt like it, I actually woke up! After a week I can finally rub my eyes again, I cant wait!

The next days my muscles improved and so did the light-sensitiveness, and by the third day after surgery I could finally watch my computer screen and TV. I had to really reduce the brightness of the screen, or all black letters on white background would get too blurry. I had spent my dark days listening to audio-books and sleeping a lot, I tend to get sleepy when I get bored.

Today is the fourth day after surgery, and I feel I can see fine, but still a bit blurry and hazy. I have extra large pupils when it is dark (over 8 mm) so I will get a bit of hazing around lights especially at night, but this is something I have noticed from using lenses also, so this does not bother me much. My eyesight will improve the next month or so, but usually it is good enough to drive within a week after surgery. I don't have much dryness either any more, but I keep the drops handy in case I feel an itch, since I still cant rub my eyes.

I hope this was informative to you, if you are planning to get eye-surgery, I know this is a bit different than if I was getting Lasik. I had my surgery at Synslaser in Oslo. To have a helping hand around the days after the surgery is invaluable, since being tired in your eyes makes cooking and finding things a bit tough. I have to hand it to my honey Espen for being a real trooper with doing a lot of the chores around the house, and being an excellent cook and butler for me. Thank you, honeyboo! <3

Laseroperation!

Wow, it has been a year since my last blog post. I guess I have not had as many blog-ideas as I hoped. Or the will to write my ideas down. I will try to change that.
I am writing in english, so I get to practise my english, since I don't often write any other language than norwegian. Do you prefer to read my blog in english or norwegian? I guess I don't have many non-norwegian readers, but I do hope to get more, so I will try to stick with english.

Today's topic is eye-surgery. And the fact that I am going to have one. OMG! I have been dreaming about having it done for years, ever since I found out I am near-sighted and started using lenses. I guess it's been over 10 years since I had to get them. But I have been using day- and night lenses that you only have to take out and change once a month, witch is no hassle at all, and I therefore did not mind using them. But since I got allergic to my cats and other things, I have not been able to use them any more. They just cloud up in matter of days, so for the past year, I have been using day-lenses that I throw away at night, and use fresh ones in the morning. To be honest, I love to sleep in and use minimal time in the morning, so to be able to cut out the fumbling with new lenses every morning is going to be awesome! And taking a nap in the middle of the day, even for just a few minutes, really dries out your eyes if you are wearing day-lenses. So yes, laser-surgery!

The type of surgery I will have is called c Ten. It is the safest and most high-teck laser-surgery you can get in Norway. I have been reading about different types of laser-surgery for many years, and at last I have decided to get this type. It differs for LASIK (the most common type of surgery) by not creating a “flap” on your cornea, witch is usually what causes problems if you are unlucky and get complications from your surgery. The c Ten uses just the laser-beam to remove the top layer of cells, and then goes on to correct your vision. It takes usually just 20-30 sec. It is usually more painful and it takes almost a week before you can see clearly, because the cells need to regrow over your outer cornea. With the flap in LASIK you don’t have to wait for this, and you usually can see clearly within the first days after the surgery. But then you can get problems with the flap moving, get regrowth under the flap and so forth, that’s why I stick to the c Ten

If you are not squeamish, here is an intro to LASIK (the one with the flap):

And here is the surgery I will take, c Ten, and you will see the difference:

So now I have been using glasses since Tuesday, because you cant wear lenses the last 7 days before the surgery. And I have been taking 1000 mg of omega 3 and C-vitamin every day for a week before surgery and two weeks after to boost healing and the immune-system. I am also going to take doses of ibuprofen from Monday to Friday next week, and also a whole regime of eye-drops I will start with just after surgery. And the surgery-date is on Wednesday 30.may! The 2-3 days after I will have to spend resting my eyes, so I can't read, watch television or use the computer! I will almost get bored to death, I think! My only rescue is audio-books. Espen has recommended Nightside, so I hope it's a very entertaining series.

Finally, here is a picture of me with my glasses, hopefully I will not have to use glasses until I am older and greyer and have to use reading-glasses.

Rhino-horn!!

Not like this, no..

No, not the animal rhino, but a plastic gizmo you use to rinse your nose with!
Yeah, ugh, I'm going to talk about slime and gore now, have to weigh up slightly for all the kitchen-building blogging.

Not very elegant, but it works!!

This has become my new best friend, according to an ear-nose-throat specialist I was at previously.
I'm struggling because of a blocked and runny nose, and have a number of polyps that clog my sinuses. This is some weird growths on the mucous membranes inside the sinuses, the scholars do not really know why it occurs, but they clog up the sinuses and make more mucus. Last resort is surgery, which I would prefer to avoid. So then I received a large regime with a whole shopping list of things I'm going to stuff up my nose. I am not particularly fond of the nasal spray, or just to blow my nose (all the mucus come just further up the nose and makes me clogged up, this apparently due to the polyps ..), so all this is completely new and unfamiliar (disgusting). First it was cortisone (pills) and nasal spray with cortisone. Since I got the nasal spray with sesame oil (?!) And some nasty drops to drip in my nose while I'm lieing, swinging my head back. And added to this I therefore rinse my nose several times a day with warm salt water by means of the nose-horn.

This is a really nice thing that actually help stuffy noses! It flushes in and out of the nose, and the salt water loosens up all the clogs. Just look forward to seeing all the weird things flowing out of your nose! Finally you can get out the lego blocks and peas you stuffed in there when you were a kid! I have heard from several directions (both physicians and the more alternative crowd) that this helps against colds and polyps, so remember putting in time to rinse your nose!

Good luck, and have an airy and clean nose!

Zumba!

Today I tried Zumba at last. I have heard it is supposedly fun and good exercise to boot, and so it was! I got really exhausted! I must be in terrible shape since I have not been exercising for a year, and my Pulsewatch really do agree. I have a really fancy one, Polar FT80 witch can be syncronized with my computer so I get to see what my pulse have been doing while I was dansing my ass off. This is what my poor heart had to go through in 30 minutes of Zumba:
Yes, I do have an unusually high maxpulse, I think it is around 220. But I have always been able to have a good exercise with a pulse around 200. Tiring indeed, but exercise should be tiring, or it just gets boring. Something I was happy to find, is that Zumba is not just latino dancing and music, but from all over the world. The first song was really Bollywood-like, and the dancing followed up, so I suddenly felt I was in a Bollywood movie. Every song is from a different place, and therefore a new routine, so if you dont get all the steps in one song, the next one will start a new all over again, so you get a fresh start with the steps. And 30 minutes of Zumba was just perfect for my lazy body starting up exercise again, without killing off my poor neck.

Norsk:

My first blog!

I started to blog in norwegian some time ago, and have decided to translate it to english, so more people can enjoy my blog.

2010 was a special year for me. I started out single, fresh kickboxer and had the world before me. Suddenly I got hurt while kickboxing, and got chronic pains in my neck. I had to stop training and use all my money on therapy. I realise I can no longer do any contactsport again..
Nasty roaches!

Springtime came and I found visitors in my kitchen. Cockroaches!! The most nasty thing ever, and it would get worse.. It turned out they had come from my neighbour and when they redid their kitchen, the roaches moved over to my appartment over the airduct. The great battle against the evil roaches started, all the appartements in my part of the building had to get checked. I did not want to use my kitchen anymore, because I felt disgusted with all the roaches. So I turned to takeaway and fastfood.. (Can you imagine that combined with no exercise??)

Then summer came, and something happened that made 2010 my best year so far! I met my wonderful boyfriend! I have lived on cloud 9 ever since, and no stormy clouds in sight so far! With this positive boost in my life,  I gathered up strength to get a loan and get going with a total redoing of my kitchen!

My love and me! <3

So this is where I stand in 2011. The year I take everything lost back: My kitchen, my health, my appartment! I now live together with my dearest, and we will now start tearing the old kitchen down. I cant wait to get my new kitchen done, so I can start making a lot of delicious food. My boyfriend does not really have a clue to what I really can do in the kitchen, and I look forward to impress him a bit!
